When I am speaking to a group about building team unity and improved performance I ask them to consider one question before they say or do anything both on and off the field. If everyone on my team did/said what I am about to, would I still do it?
This one question has more power than most any other I ever pose to individuals or groups. It’s a branch of practical existentialism, how we find meaning and purpose in our lives, and what questions we should use to guide ourselves.
This question fits nicely in a family context as well. If everyone in my family did/said what I am about to, would I still do it?
Our teams, relationships, and families are served well to consider this question. Consider the potential positive outcome. If my healthy positive words and actions influence my team to do the same we will all benefit. The synergy of many acting for the common good is incredibly powerful.
