As a dedicated, lifelong athlete himself, Paul has a unique understanding of the sporting mind and a gift for building trust and communicating with athletes. He was a member of the US National Karate Team from 1982 to1983 and continues to compete, bringing home his first national title in 2013.
Paul has competed as a member of the US National Team at the World Karate Championships in 2014 in Munich, Germany and in Slovenia in 2015.
At the University of Illinois, Paul studied with renowned sports psychologist Dan Gould, where he learned many classic techniques for visualization, mistake management, optimizing energy levels, and more. He is also a Certified Mental Trainer. These form the core of Paul’s practice with athletes.
Paul uses a unique approach that blends these western techniques with karate’s Bushido code and aspects of cognitive therapy. He focuses on helping athletes strive to become well-rounded, emotionally balanced individuals in their personal lives, with the belief that the best performances come from those who have happy, healthy lives on and off the field. He works with individual athletes as well as coaches, general managers, and athletic directors of high school, college, and professional sports programs.
